Chemistry & Uses
Uses in perfumery :
Alpha-Terpinene is used in fruity and exotic notes, especially in mango for a spicy touch. Also used in woody and spicy notes, for freshness and a powerful top note.
Year of discovery :
Data not available.
Natural availability :
Alpha-Terpinene is found in many plant extracts, including Bergamot EO, Juniper Berry EO and Lime EO. It can be extracted from these plants essential oils.
Isomerism :
Alpha-Terpinene differs from beta-Terpinene, gamma-Terpinene and delta-Terpinene, its isomers. They all have a different smell. alpha-Terpinene is the most medicinal and most reminiscent of Lime EO. D-Limonene, Pinene, Myrcene and Ocimene are the constitutional isomers of Terpinene. They all belong to the terpene family, whose common point is that they can be synthesized by a Diels-Alder reaction, starting from Isoprene.
Synthesis precursor :
Alpha-Terpinene can be a precursor to the synthesis of other terpenes, for example by a Diels-Alder reaction.
Synthesis route :
Alpha-Terpinene is a terpene obtained by an isomerization of D-Limonene in an acidic medium.
Stability :
Terpenes tend to polymerize by oxydation.
Very unstable in alkaline functional bases as soap. In this base, its smell in not percievable.
Other comments :
In comparision to other terpenes, Alpha-Terpinene has a distinctive smell close to Lime EO.
