Chemistry & Uses
Uses in perfumery :
Geranyl Butyrate is used in fruity notes - pineapple, apple, peach and pear. Enhances a fruity effect when associated to rosy notes.
Year of discovery :
Data not available.
Natural availability :
Geranyl Butyrate is especially present in Geranium EO, from which it can be extracted in its natural state.
Isomerism :
Neryl Butyrate, a diastereoisomer of Geranyl Butyrate is less rosy but keeps a butyric and waxy aspect specific to butyrates.
Synthesis precursor :
Geranyl Butyrate is not a precursor to the synthesis of another compound of olfactory interest.
Synthesis route :
Geranyl Butyrate results from an esterification reaction between Butyric Acid and Geraniol, by acid catalysis. The use of chlorobutyric acid or butyric anhydride may provide a better yield on this reaction.
Stability :
May form butyric acid through time.
Other comments :
Geranyl Butyrate is one of the only molecules of perfumery mixing a rosy and butyric note.
