Chemistry & Uses
Uses in perfumery :
Citronellyl Formate us used in rosy, fruity, animalic, woody and leather notes. Often used in functional fragrance because it is very stable.
Year of discovery :
Data not available.
Natural availability :
The main plant extract in which Citronellyl Formate is found is Geranium EO, as it contains up to 12% (for Chinese geranium). It is therefore possible to obtain it in its natural state from the essential oil of different species of geranium.
| Ingredient | % min | % max |
|---|---|---|
| Geranium oil (bourbon) | 7 | 12 |
| Geranium oil (China) | 7 | 12 |
| Geranium oil (Madagascar) | 6 | 11 |
| Geranium oil (Egypt) | 4 | 8 |
Isomerism :
Citronellyl Formate has an asymmetric carbon. It is nevertheless its racemic mixture of isomers that is used in perfumery. Aldehyde C-14 is a constitutional isomer of Citronellyl Formate. However, both do not share the same smell, as Aldehyde C-14 is fruity-peach.
Synthesis precursor :
Citronellyl Formate is not a precursor to the synthesis of another compound of olfactory interest.
Synthesis route :
Citronellyl Formate is obtained by an acid esterification between formic acid (or methanoic) and Citronellol.
Stability :
May form formic acid (methanoic acid) through time.
Other comments :
Comparing it to other molecules of the same family as Geranyl acetate or Geranyl Propionate, Citronellyl Formate is more reminiscent of Geranium EO.
