Latin name :
Canarium luzonicum
Botanical profile :
Elemi is a tree of the Borseraceae family (such as incense or myrrh) and of the genus Canarium.
Geographic origin :
Originally from Southeast Asia, elemi is produced in the Phillippines
Chemotypes :
Other elemis are known although they are much less commonly used in perfumery:
Canarium ovatum : also native to the Philippine archipelago.
Canarium muelleri or scrub turpentine of Queensland, native to Australia.
Canarium Bengalense or elemi of Bengal and China, whose essential oil contains a high dose of Beta-Caryophyllene.
Canarium schweinfurthii or elemi of Cameroon and Guinea.
Canarium madagascariensis : originally from Madagascar and also called ''ramy ''.

Extraction process :
Like incense or myrrh, the secretion and exsudation of the resin contained in the tree can be done with the ''tapping '' technique: from January to June, an incision is made on the bark. A white gum comes from these incisions and turns yellow in contact with the air. Harvest is made on palm leaves while the gum is still white and the gum is stored in a warehouse. The gum is steam distilled in Europe, to collect the essential oil.
A single tree gives 5kg of gum per year.
